Dream house

Day Fourteen:

Show us your dream house! Either draw it, find a picture of it, or compile a picture of it through an editing program. Why is it your dream house?

My dream house isn’t actually a house. It’s more like a community. I’ve been thinking about it for years and it’s something I’d love to do some day. At the center there would be the largest building consisting of the kitchen, dining, and living spaces. Around that would be the bath house, bedrooms, reading room, and offices. The areas in between would be well landscaped and manicured, with nice pathways connecting everything.

I like the idea of living with nature and everything would be put to use here. Collecting rain water, natural lighting, eco friendly building products and practices, solar panels, etc.

Life Changing

Day Thirteen:

How has having a website and being involved in online communities and forums changed your life? What do you think you’d be doing online if you never got into making websites or online communities?

Being an introvert, the Internet is absolutely essential as a link to the outside world. I was much worse growing up than I am now but making new friends offline is very difficult for me. Online however I find it a lot easier to reach out to people and I actually feel like my online friends are far more important than any friend I’ve had in the fleshy world since middle school. This is because they know me more than most others.

It’s also allowed me to become a more creative person, though admittedly it hasn’t always felt that way. It’s allowed me to write, to share, to design, and most importantly to learn. If I hadn’t gotten into this line of work I’d probably be teaching.

Must Have Software

Day Twelve:

What are some of your must have programs on your computer? For those with smart phones or tablets, what are some must have applications on your devices?

On the Desktop

  1. FileZilla or CyberDuck – FTP
  2. Mudlet – playing my MUDs
  3. Trillian or Adium & Skype – communication
  4. Dropbox – sharing files
  5. Office – for getting stuff done

On my HTC Evo:

  1. Gmail – email, obviously
  2. Feedly – reading RSS
  3. Opera – browsing the web
  4. FBreader – reading ebooks
  5. Google Sky – continuing my wonder of the cosmos :P

Inspired

Day Eleven:

What is a website that you admire? Why do you admire it?

Sarah J. Bray is an awesome local lady that owns a web dev company here in Hampton Roads called S.Joy Studios. I met a woman at a WordPress MeetUp and later saw something on her Twitter about Sarah. I followed the link and fell in love with how the site looked and then with her quirky writing style. Her posts are always a good read and her site is one of few where I read every post she makes (and additionally all the other things sent to my inbox). Her company’s work never fails to impress and that’s just another reason why she makes it onto this list.

There are a lot of girls in my group of bloggers online that I read but I wouldn’t say anyone sticks out as a favorite for me right now. I no longer read everyone’s religiously, which is something I’m trying to get back into but just haven’t had the energy to do. In a perfect world I’d like to be able to read and comment on everyone’s blogs but there’s chores and other duties to do throughout the day. Maybe some time soon I’ll make it a real priority.

As far as favorite sites go though, Smashing Magazine comes to mind first and foremost. It is one of the only collection sites that I read frequently and even follow avidly on Twitter.

Daily Routine

Day Ten:

When you log on the computer what do you normally do? What sites do you visit?

The first thing I normally so is log into Skype and say hello to my sister or Nichole. And that’s usually followed by loading up League of Legends, or at least it has lately. Bring up Veracity, my email, G+, and Twitter and I’m set to go for the first two hours. Somewhere in there breakfast will be had.

I like starting my “mornings” like this. It’s relaxing and it gives me time to just wake up and get into a decent mood before tackling chores and other work.
